Infant care in Spring, Texas: how to determine healthy eating in your infant

Posted on 08-25-2014

For your infant to grow and develop normally, he or she needs proper nutrition and good eating habits. You may be concerned about how much or how little your infant is eating and if he or she is eating normally. Here are some general guidelines to help you determine if your infant’s food intake is enough for proper development.

There are no rules, just guidelines

When you infant is born, he or she can only eat a teaspoon of milk since his or her stomach is so small. Therefore, your baby will need to eat frequently during the early months. There is not any set rule for how much your infant should be eating. Instead of trying to use an absolute amount or length of time for feedings, you should look for signs that your infant is eating enough. The signs to watch out for every day include gaining about one-half ounce to one ounce of weight, urinating frequently enough to have at least six wet diapers, and having two or three soft bowel movements.

A typical range of feeding, if you are breast feeding, is around ten feedings per day, including at least one at night. Since each baby is different, yours could be eating more or less, therefore simply watch for any changes in his or her pattern.

If you are bottle feeding your infant, the typical range is about three or four ounces at a time during the first month, and then an additional one ounce per month up to eight ounces. Again, your infant’s amounts may vary but watch for any change in his or her pattern.
